Jonas Vingegaard has taken a huge step towards securing the yellow jersey in Paris. While week three has only just begun, the Danish Jumbo-Visma rider has managed to gain a substantial amount of time on his main rival Tadej Pogacar in the time trial of stage 16. "I felt amazing today," Vingegaard says, sounding relieved after crossing the finish line in a flash interview. "I think it's my best time trial I've ever ridden. Today, I truly surprised myself with this performance."
After finishing, Vingegaard made a point out of thanking his team for their support during this time trial. "To be honest, there were moments when there was so much noise that I couldn't hear what was being said on the radio. But the team management coached me well today. I'm grateful for that."
According to Vingegaard, the Tour isn't over just yet
How did the leader of the general classification approach the race against the clock? "After the first flat section, I pushed really hard going uphill. Then I recovered a bit on the downhill and maintained a steady pace on the flat. I'm very happy with the victory, my first time trial win in the
Tour de France."
Has the Tour now been decided, according to Vingegaard? Of course not, says the yellow jersey rider. "No, there are still some challenging stages ahead. We're looking forward to them."
