Look who's back! Jonas Vingegaard trains outdoors and has high hopes for Tour de France participation

Jonas Vingegaard is doing well. Just over a month after his crash in the Tour of the Basque Country, the two-time Tour winner trained outdoors for the first time on Tuesday. He shared in a video on the team channels of Visma | Lease a Bike that he is feeling good. From Denmark, posing in front of a matching yellow flower field, the Danish superstar of the Dutch team addressed the cycling world. "It's wonderful to finally be able to cycle again."

"It's the first time I'm back on the normal bikes outdoors. Riding feels normal again," we hear him say. "I can cycle on the road again! I'm looking forward to the next steps. I feel good, getting better day by day. I still have some things to recover from, but it's improving."

Tour de France remains an option for Vingegaard

Vingegaard also had something to say about his original goal for the year: defending his title at the Tour de France. "Of course, I hope to be at the start of the Tour de France. We simply do not yet know what it will be like, how my recovery will progress, and what my form will be there. I'm really doing my best to be as good as possible and make it to the start," said Vingegaard.

It was previously announced that Vingegaard would definitely not participate in the Criterium du Dauphiné, a race that was initially planned as his final preparation for the Tour. If Vingegaard, as it now increasingly seems, makes it to the start of the Tour, it will be uncertain what his physical condition will be. The last major update came halfway through when the Dane was allowed to leave the hospital in Spain. In the Tour, Vingegaard hopes to once again compete with Tadej Pogacar, his eternal rival in France.
