Tim Wellens single-handedly gave the peloton a thorough workout in Friday's Tour de France stage. The Belgian rider from UAE Emirates-XRG rode prominently at the front in the early hours of the race, reducing the peloton to around 30 riders.
Sepp Kuss and Matteo Jorgenson of Visma | Lease a Bike, among others, were dropped, along with numerous other riders. Wellens shared the watts he used to make the selection on social media.
The Belgian rode his record watts over 20 minutes (484 watts), 60 minutes (444 watts), and 90 minutes (402 watts), as he shows. ‘Haters will say it's fake’ was the telling caption, accompanied by a wink, in Wellens' screenshot.
Tadej Pogacar was ultimately unable to win at La Plagne, but still holds a comfortable lead in the yellow jersey.
