The Italian's rear tire exploded suddenly, leaving him stranded on the roadside with a damaged wheel. Fortunately, with a new bike, the time trial specialist was able to continue his journey without apparent damage. Shortly thereafter, Robert Gesink also experienced misfortune with a crash, understandably leaving him frustrated.
