2026 World Championship medal table: Spain the big winners, USA the big shock, Britain the big disappointment

Spain seems to come out on top here. Of course, it’s one of the most successful cycling nations in history, but it’s still somewhat striking. After all, last year the Spanish team hit rock bottom: not a single Spanish man finished in the top ten of a Grand Tour, and the women’s team faced the same problem. Enric Mas more than made up for that with his victory at this year’s Vuelta, but he fell short at the World Championships.

Outsider Paula Blasi also failed to succeed. But in Spain, the future clearly belongs to the younger generation. Benjamin Noval was the star among the juniors, winning both the world title in the time trial and the road race. His compatriot Alejandra Neira won the women’s road race in the same age category, making Spain the only country with three world titles. Add to that the silver and bronze medals won by Héctor Álvarez (men’s U23), and it looks like they have a golden generation.

Behind the Spanish team, two countries each won two gold medals, with the Netherlands being the most successful of the two. This puts TeamNL in second place in the medal count, thanks to the titles won by Demi Vollering (women’s road race) and Ryan Gal (U23 time trial). Nienke Vinke took silver in the U23 time trial, while Mathieu van der Poel finished third in the closing road race.

The United States also enjoyed a great deal of success, though mostly in spurts, with two surprises. Ashlin Barry essentially laid out the blueprint for Brandon McNulty. They both won the world road title with a solo breakaway—one in the U23 category, the other in the elite category. Those were, however, the only medals for the USA.

Belgium had to settle for fifth place, just behind Italy. They had so much more potential, but only Remco Evenepoel managed to win gold, in the individual time trial. His dream of becoming a two-time world champion did not come true. There was also a silver medal for juniors Vic De Smet and Jana Decruyenaere, while U23 riders Fleur Moors and Luca Vierstraete took bronze.

Host country Canada came close to winning gold once, but had to settle for Isabella Holmgren’s silver medal in the women’s U23 road race. Notably, cycling powerhouses France and Great Britain failed to win a single gold medal. The French ended up with two silver and one bronze medal, while the British took home one silver and one bronze.
