Bad news has emerged from Spain, where Jaume Guardeño of Caja Rural-Seguros RGA has been seriously injured after a training accident. The 23-year-old Spaniard, who finished 14th overall at the most recent Vuelta a España, was struck during a ride on Tuesday and later airlifted to hospital, where he remains in intensive care. Caja Rural confirmed the news on Thursday through its official channels. The team said that Guardeño crashed during training shortly after his recent appearance at the Volta a Catalunya and was involved in a collision with a vehicle, suffering serious injuries as a result.
According to the team statement, the rider from Alicante, who lives in Caldes de Montbui, was urgently transferred by helicopter to Taulí Hospital in Sabadell. There, he was admitted to the intensive care unit with severe injuries while awaiting further medical assessment.
