It had been in the air for a while, but since
Monday afternoon it is official: the
Tour de France 2028 will start in Reims. The Grand Est region will host the first four stages of the race in two years' time, following back-to-back Grand Départs outside France with Barcelona (2026) and Edinburgh (2027).
Reims previously hosted the Tour start in 1956 and will do so again in 2028. The race will begin as early as 24 June. "The event follows an adjusted schedule due to the
Olympic Games," the
ASO confirmed. The Tour will therefore finish on 16 July, three days before the Olympic time trial in Los Angeles on 19 July. The Olympic road race is scheduled for 23 July.
"The city of Clovis and
Pauline Ferrand-Prévot — a native of the region — will fire the starting gun for four days of racing in the Grand Est, taking in the Marne, Ardennes, Meuse and Moselle departments."
"The Tour returns to a part of the country that has shaped the history of the Grande Boucle since the first stage heading eastward. Metz — at the time a German city — became the Tour's first foreign destination in 1906."
