While it’s not uncommon to see a stray dog crossing the road in the Giro d’Italia, the third and final stage in Albania brought a different kind of obstacle, a goat. Riders at the back of the peloton had to brake hard when a goat suddenly ran across the road. Dion Smith (Intermarché–Wanty) took a big hit from the animal but impressively managed to stay on his bike. Crossing goat causes dangerous situation in Giro d'Italia
A traffic officer stood on the side of the road in Albania and appeared to have spotted trouble looming when a group of goats stood watching in the grass as the peloton raced by. The noise undoubtedly made an impression, and although the officer did his best to keep the group of goats at bay, one young goat slipped through his grasp.
The animal crossed the road; luckily, most of the peloton had already passed. Smith, however, got the goat against his bike in a state of panic, and both remained upright with impressive moves. Smith could continue while the goat caught its breath on a rock by the side of the road. "The scariest thing was that I didn't know which direction the goat would go,“ Smith said afterward, laughing to
Sporza. 'It was very bizarre."
"I had already noticed that a police officer was trying to stop some goats. But one escaped at the last minute," the Australian added. As an Aussie, he is used to a thing or two in his own country, but it was a close call. "Luckily, I could reduce my speed and didn't crash. I think it looked worse than it was. I hardly felt it. Maybe he wanted to grab the food from my back pocket?"

Valentin Madouas was traditionally
handed a piglet as the best Breton rider. The Frenchman from Groupama-FDJ finished third and appreciated the gift as the best Breton of the day. We're not sure if the piglet shared his sentiment, though...
