That was quite striking on Saturday afternoon in the Vuelta a España when suddenly, there were three DNFs behind the name of a rider from Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe. Nico Denz, Patrick Gamper, and Daniel Felipe Martinez, three important teammates of leader and red jersey holder Primoz Roglic, dropped out. There is reportedly a salmonella outbreak within the team.
Multiple sources reported this via X. There is intense speculation regarding the occurrence on social media and in various TV broadcasts. What kind of disease would it be exactly, or is it food poisoning?
Will Roglic escape the food poisoning or salmonella dance inside Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe?
According to the Spanish TV channel TVE, there is even talk of the hospitalization of one of the team members (it would be a staff member) due to salmonella contamination. The name of the person in question is (logically) unknown.
On Friday afternoon, Martinez played a vital role in the service of Roglic, who then took over the red jersey from Ben O'Connor and thus seemed to be on his way to a fourth overall victory in the Tour of Spain. The latter still seems to be the case, as on Saturday - when his domestiques had already given up - Roglic continuously rode strongly at the front and, in the end, apparently simply kept the red jersey.
Roglic admitted to being unaware of the symptoms in the morning and did not want to say too much about the medical situation. "It's not going so well, but this Vuelta is already advanced. Then everyone has problems and headaches," he explained in a somewhat characterizing fashion. "I have a lot of respect for my teammates for giving everything they had in them. I am doing well, for the moment, anyway. It was a good day."
