Not only in Europe, but also in North America, cycling will be taking place this weekend. Next week, the well-known races in Quebec and Montreal are on the program, but first, on Saturday, it's time for the Maryland Classic in Baltimore. Several notable names are participating.
The Maryland Classic was canceled in 2024, which means Mattias Skjelmose remains the defending champion, having won in 2023. The Dane is back again, in the run-up to his main goal this fall: the World Championships in cycling in Rwanda. To prepare himself as well as possible, he traveled to the United States a while ago for an altitude training camp with teammate Quinn Simmons.
The American champion also has his sights set on the world title. “The last altitude training camp of the year is over. Now comes a block of races, a trip around the world, and a chance to put the icing on the cake in the best season I've had so far,” said the winner of a stage in the Tour of Catalonia and Tour of Switzerland. Sam Oomen will also be there on behalf of Lidl-Trek.

Strong participants present in Baltimore

As a 1. Pro race, the winner of the Maryland Classic 200 receives UCI points, and they know that at Uno-X, where they are still hoping for WorldTour status in 2026. The Norwegian team has already flown Jonas Abrahamsen, Fredrik Dversnes, and the Johannessen brothers across the Atlantic, one week before the Canadian races.
EF Education-EasyPost (Marijn van den Berg), Jayco AlUla (Mauro Schmid), Israel-Premier Tech (Rhiley Sheehan and Pascal Ackermann), TotalEnergies (Anthony Turgis), Novo Nordisk (Matyas Kopecky), and Tudor (Marius Mayrhofer) are also participating. Neilson Powless (EF) and Brandon McNulty, representing the national team, who will be absent from the World Championships, will also be there. The Maryland Classic will be held on a local circuit in Baltimore, which includes an official climb, Greater Roland Park (0.9 km at 5.2%). The race will end on Saturday and can be followed on YouTube via the organization's channel.
