Jarno Widar has won the Tre Valli Varesine. The Belgian rider from Lotto-Intermarché, along with Matteo Jorgenson (Visma | Lease a Bike), was able to follow a surge by Tom Pidcock (Pinarello-Q36.5). He then surprised the Brit with an early sprint. It was the first professional victory for the top Belgian talent.

Final test before Il Lombardia

The Tour of Lombardy is fast approaching, and the Italian cycling community has been buzzing with anticipation for quite some time. Davide Piganzoli (Visma | Lease a Bike) won the Giro dell’Emilia, but the final test took place in the region around Varese.

The Tre Valli Varesine is a time-honoured race with a very distinguished list of winners. Last year, Tadej Pogačar came out on top.
Of course, the Slovenian wasn’t there this year. Brand-new world champion Brandon McNulty, who had previously finished second in the Coppa Agostoni, was in attendance.

Early breakaway formed

With competitors like Ben Healy (EF Education-EasyPost), Romain Grégoire (Groupama-FDJ), Giulio Pellizzari (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe), Tom Pidcock (Pinarello - Q36.5), and Matteo Jorgenson (Visma | Lease a Bike), there were plenty of contenders.
Early in the race, a five-rider breakaway formed. It included Noah Ramsay (Alpecin-Premier Tech), Fabian Weiss (Tudor), Matteo Turconi (Bardiani CSF 7 Saber), Kyrylo Tsarenko, and Tommaso Nencini (both Solution Tech NIPPO Rali). Nencini was the first to drop back, leaving the group to continue with four riders halfway through the race.

In the hills, Tsarenko and Ramsay proved to be the strongest of the breakaway riders, but they were quickly caught. Mikkel Honoré (EF Education-EasyPost) then broke away on his own.
Behind him, there was another serious crash involving Luke Plapp (Jayco AlUla), Lorenzo Fortunato (XDS Astana), and Quick-Step rookie Henrique Bravo, among others. They were all out of the race.
UAE Team Emirates-XRG then took control of the race, but it was Quinn Simmons who got things started with a surge. The American from Lidl-Trek joined Honoré, along with Piganzoli. Simmons then went solo, but the favourites weren’t far behind.
When the breakaway riders were caught, it was Pidcock’s turn.

Pidcock, Jorgenson, and Widar in the running for the win

The Brit launched a strong attack, and only Jarno Widar (Lotto-Intermarché) and Jorgenson were able to keep up.
Visma | Lease a Bike then cleverly disrupted the breakaway, preventing world champion McNulty, among others, from getting away. It was up to Movistar to do the work: as a result, the three leaders were able to pull further and further ahead.
Thirty seconds at the foot of the final climb: it seemed to be enough. They worked well together and reached the finish line.
There, they looked at each other. Top favorite Pidcock forced Widar to take the lead, but it was Pidcock who was in the lead in the final few hundred meters.
With 250 meters to go, Widar made his move and completely surprised Pidcock with an early attack. He claimed his first professional victory.
