Adam Yates won the Coppa Agostini. The British rider has thus scored another victory for UAE, the 90th (!) for the team from the Emirates this season. For a long time, it looked like Yates would have to battle it out with Carlos Canal (Movistar), but he was unlucky. Yates won the 1.1 race solo.
At 1 PM local time, the race started in Lissone, Italy, where the finish line would also be located after 169 kilometers. With three climbs in the local laps, which had to be completed four times, there were enough obstacles to make it a tough race. Still, it took a long time before the race really took off.
That happened with 100 kilometers to go. A group of about eighteen riders escaped from the peloton. The top favorite, Isaac Del Toro, on whom all eyes were focused, missed the breakaway. However, UAE Emirates-XRG had four other riders in the breakaway, with Adam Yates, Ivo Oliveira, Rafal Majka, and Jay Vine.
This gave UAE a numerical advantage in the first peloton. Only three teams managed to have two riders at the front: Decathlon-AG2R La Mondiale, Movistar, and Burgos-BH. When UAE attacked with Yates, Carlos Canal slipped away on behalf of Movistar. The duo gained a 23-second lead over the second group in the race.

UAE present on all fronts, but benefits most from Canal's flat tire

The peloton began to make its move in the final hour of the race. With 37 kilometers to go, the peloton caught up with the second group, putting Del Toro, among others, back in a good position. However, UAE had everything under control, as Jay Vine had slipped away with Paul Lapeira (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale).
The duo was riding half a minute behind the leaders. Vine did not cooperate with Yates at the front of the chase. Lapeira, in turn, did not want to take Vine with him to the front and kept his legs still. With 24 kilometers to go, the duo was caught by the peloton. The gap to the duo at the front at that point was more than two minutes! The winner would therefore be found at the front.
Canal then suffered a flat tire and changed bikes. The Spaniard had to chase Yates, who kept pedaling hard. The gap increased to one minute, allowing Yates to ride unchallenged to victory. Canal finished second, as the severely thinned-out peloton was still far behind. Velasco (XDS-Astana) won the sprint there.
