After an incident-free opening day at the Vuelta a España, the first riders got a much closer look at the tarmac during
Stage 2 on Sunday. Sergio Geovani Chumil of Burgos Burpellet BH failed to reach the finish after crashing, while several other riders also required treatment from the race doctors.
For the second day in succession, the jury report contained no fines or other penalties for either riders or sports directors, but the medical report was considerably busier. Chumil crashed heavily onto his head with 50 kilometres remaining and also suffered injuries to his left shoulder and left elbow.
The 25-year-old Guatemalan was unable to continue and, after receiving treatment at the roadside, was taken away in an ambulance. Unfortunately, he was not the first rider who had needed attention from the race doctors during the stage.

Uijtdebroeks loses time after crash
After 48 kilometers,
Cian Uijtdebroeks had already
hit the ground. The Movistar rider suffered an “injury to the left lower leg” in the crash but was able to continue after receiving treatment at the medical car. Uijtdebroeks eventually conceded 18 seconds to the first group in stage 2. IDL Procycling's live report also recorded that the Belgian had crashed and was forced to chase behind the peloton early in the stage.
Movistar subsequently provided what was, in principle, positive news in a medical update: “Cian has wounds and abrasions to his right hip and right knee, as well as his left elbow and left arm. He has also suffered an injury to his left ankle, which we will continue to monitor. In principle, Cian will start on Monday.”
Alongside Chumil and Uijtdebroeks,
Sergio Samitier also paid a visit to the medical team after suffering injuries to the right side of his body. The Cofidis rider was nevertheless able to make it to the finish relatively quickly, crossing the line 1:41 behind the stage winner.
