The news had been in the air for a while, but it has now been definitively confirmed: Visma | Lease a Bike has informed cycling platform Vélo that Jonas Vingegaard's season is over. The killer bees emphasize that the two-time Tour winner needs to recover after an extremely intense period, which he concluded with a victory in the Tour of Poland.
"Jonas is done for the year," a representative of the WorldTour team straightforwardly said. "His wife is due to give birth to their second child soon, and as an athlete, he needs to recuperate after an intense spring and summer."
Looking at the comeback trajectory of the 27-year-old Vingegaard, it is not surprising that he is already bringing his season to an end. As is well known, he had a bad crash at the Tour of the Basque Country in early April. He sustained several serious injuries there: a collapsed lung, lung contusion, a broken collarbone and multiple broken ribs, which was no small matter. Only after twelve days in the hospital was he allowed to go home.
In the Tour de France, Vingegaard finished second behind an unbeatable Tadej Pogacar, and a few weeks later, as mentioned, he won the overall classification in Poland. "Honestly, I thought my season was over after my crash in the Basque Country. I even feared for my career for a moment. My performances in the Tour and here in Poland are better than I could have dreamed of. Now I’m going back home to support my pregnant wife. I’m looking forward to that," he already said after that victory.
