Vuelta a España fines & penalties: Roglič and Vanthourenhout booked by jury on stage 15

Every day, it is up to the race jury to identify and penalise rule violations with a yellow card, a fine, and/or time penalties. The race jury’s report is tracked by IDL Pro Cycling.

Stage 15, Palma del Río – Córdoba (110.2 km)
Primož Roglič has been fined in the Vuelta. During the fifteenth stage, he was found guilty of the notorious ‘sticky water bottle’ offence. He was fined 200 Swiss francs for this. Team manager Michael Vanthourenhout was fined 500 francs for the same offence. A motorcyclist was also penalised for the same offence.
Stage 14, Jaén – Sierra de la Pandera (154.5 km)
In stage fourteen, there was little to report in the jury’s report. The only man to cross the line was Victor Girona Villalba, a mechanic with Uno-X Mobility. He was shown a yellow card for failing to feed his riders in accordance with the regulations.
Stage 13, Almunecar – Lajo (192.8 km)
No fines to report.
Stage 12, Vera – Calar Alto (166.6 km)
Very few fines have been handed out so far in this Vuelta a España, but on a sweltering day heading towards Calar Alto, team managers and riders were pushing the boundaries en masse. Team managers Jens Keukeleire (Alpecin-Premier Tech), Bart Leysen (Tudor), Benoît Vaugrenard (Groupama-FDJ United) and Phil West (Picnic PostNL) were fined 500 francs for supplying riders where it was not permitted.
The riders who accepted these supplies were also fined 200 francs, namely: Hugo Houle (Alpecin), Marco Brenner (Tudor), Remy Rochas (Groupama) and Chris Hamilton (Picnic). No fewer than five riders were fined 500 francs and had 25 UCI points deducted for disposing of rubbish outside the designated areas.
General classification leader Enric Mas of Movistar was one of them, but his team-mate Raul Garcia Pierna, stage winner Jakob Omrzel (Bahrain Victorious), Valentin Paret-Peintre (Soudal Quick-Step) and Jarno Widar (Lotto-Intermarché) were also found guilty of this offence.
Stage 11, Cartagena – Lorca (153.8 km)
Several penalties were handed out during the relatively quiet eleventh stage. Mauro Vansevenant (Soudal Quick-Step) and Rasmus Tiller (Uno-X Mobility) were fined 200 Swiss francs for taking food from the car at the wrong time. Team managers Niki Terpstra and Gino Van Oudenhove were even fined 500 Swiss francs for the same offence.
In addition, a yellow card was issued to the EF Education-EasyPost team. Team manager Ken Vanmarcke had behaved inappropriately in the team car and was therefore given a slice of cheese.
Stage 10, Alcaraz - Elche de la Sierra (184.7 km)
No fines to report.
Stage 9, Villajoyosa – Alto de Aitana (187.4 km)
Penalties in the first week of the Vuelta a España were, for the most part, limited to breaches of the rules regarding the handing over of food. Team manager Marco Marcato (UAE Emirates-XRG) was fined 500 francs for feeding riders in a location not authorised for that purpose. Team manager Rafael Valls of Jayco AlUla was fined 200 francs for failing to follow instructions from the race officials.
Stage 8, Puçol - Xeraco (161.0 km)
All eyes were on Tadej Pogacar’s crash, but many more riders took a tumble in Stage 8. The riders who fell or were held up in the final 5 kilometers were given the same time as winner Bryan Coquard. Primož Roglič (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe) was one of them.
Incidentally, Red Bull was penalized by the race jury for the first time in this Vuelta, specifically team manager Sven Vanthourenhout. The Belgian was fined 500 francs because a rider on his team threw trash in an unauthorized area. However, the culprit could not be identified.
Stage 7, Vall d'Alba – Aramón Valdelinares (149.8 km)
So far, the jury hadn’t earned much money, but that began to change on Day 7. Team manager Cyril Dessel (Decathlon CMA CGM) and Jonathan Carty (NSN) were fined 500 francs for supplying the rider from the car in a zone not designated for that purpose.
Alexey Lutsenko was fined for the second time in this Vuelta. After receiving a yellow card in Stage 5, he was now fined 200 francs for accepting food or drink from Carty’s car. Lorenzo Fortunato and Henok Mulueberhan of XDS Astana were also fined 200 francs for unauthorized feeding, and their team director, Alexandr Shefer, was fined 500 francs for the same offense.
But that wasn't the end of it for Astana, as the Kazakh team also saw Alessandro Romele receive a penalty. The Italian was shown a yellow card for allegedly endangering others during the race.
Stage 6, Alcossebre - Castelló (177.4 km)
No penalties from the jury.
Stage 5, Costa Daurada - Terres de l'Ebre (173.3 km)
In Stage 5, Orluis Aular was the first rider to be penalized by the race jury. The Movistar sprinter was disqualified due to an incident involving his NSN teammate Alexey Lutsenko, who also received a penalty.
The jury report revealed that Aular had not followed the rules. Officially, Aular was accused of veering off his line, thereby obstructing another rider and putting him in danger during the final sprint with an elbow to the face.
He was fined 500 Swiss francs for this, as well as receiving an 8-point deduction in the points classification, a demotion in the results, and a yellow card. Lutsenko received a yellow card for deviating from his chosen line and endangering another rider during the final sprint by throwing an elbow.
Stage 4, Andorra la Vella – Andorra la Vella (104.8 km)
No penalties from the jury.
Stage 3, Gruissan-Aude – Font Romeu (174.0 km)
No penalties from the jury, but of course an announcement regarding the cancellation of the third stage due to a sudden rainstorm. “After consultation between the organizers and the race commissioner, it was decided to call off the race due to weather conditions. Poor visibility, strong winds, and icy road conditions led to this decision. All points earned during the race will be canceled.”
Stage 2, Monaco – Manosque (202.1 km)
No penalties from the judges.
Stage 1, Monaco - Monaco (9.4 km)
No penalties from the judges.
