Is a Gravel World Championship in Australia really a Gravel World Championship in Australia without a kangaroo getting in the way? Anyway, luckily everything went well on Sunday near Nannup. The marsupial hopped onto the road just ahead of the peloton, but fortunately the Danes leading the pack were on their toes.

In the second quarter of the race, the peloton was chasing a three-man breakaway group that included Dutch rider Peter Schulting. However, Jonas Lindberg, who was leading the group, suddenly saw a kangaroo jump onto the road in front of him.
Lindberg was startled, as was Magnus Bak Klaris, who was driving behind him , but both managed to stay on their feet. Meanwhile, the kangaroo hopped undisturbed across to the other side of the gravel road.

It wouldn't be the first time a kangaroo caused a major crash in 2026. In this year's Tour Down Under, several animals jumped onto the road, causing a major crash in the peloton.
At the time, race leader Jay Vine broke his wrist, while second-place rider and UAE teammate Jhonatan Narvaez fractured several thoracic vertebrae. Menno Huising, a Dutch rider for Visma | Lease a Bike, suffered a broken collarbone in that bizarre crash in January of this year.
