A flat tire can happen to anyone. But what happened to
Isaac Del Toro during
the second stage of the Tour de France is something we’ve never really seen before. The Mexican rider from UAE Team Emirates-XRG got a flat tire and was overlooked by his team car. It caused a moment of panic, though in hindsight, it’s something we can laugh about now.
Del Toro got a flat tire on an uncategorized climb, about sixty kilometers from the finish. He stood calmly on the side of the road waiting, but watched as his team car drove right past him without a second glance. It turned out to be a radio malfunction, so there was a moment of panic. The team car stopped, and the mechanic got on the Mexican champion’s bike to ride back and deliver it.
By that point, the second support vehicle had already reached Del Toro, so the mechanic’s bike was no longer needed. The shadow leader of UAE Team Emirates-XRG had fallen two minutes behind. But he was already flying up the final stretch of the climb, and he showed off some impressive skills on the descent. In no time at all, those two minutes were gone. The UAE team will breathe a sigh of relief.
