The sprinters were finally set to get another opportunity on stage 4 of the UAE Tour, after Tuesday’s time trial and Wednesday’s mountain stage, but things went wrong on the run-in to the finale. A heavy crash ripped through the peloton, with Fabio Jakobsen among those brought down. Alongside the Picnic PostNL rider, Ethan Hayter, Robbe Ghys and Daan Hoole also hit the ground.

The breakaway was still up the road, but as the finale approached, the pace in the peloton continued to rise. That increase in speed contributed to a mid-bunch crash, with Hayter initially appearing to be the worst affected.
However, it quickly became clear that Jakobsen, Hoole and Ghys were also down. They were unable to avoid the incident and ended up sliding across the asphalt of a long, wide road cutting through the United Arab Emirates.

Ghys soon received the worst news, as the Belgian rider was forced to abandon. Jakobsen, Hoole and Hayter were able to continue. Jakobsen even provided the TV cameraman with a brief update after the crash: “I rode over something and my front tyre blew. I went straight down. But I’ll make it home.”

Footage from the scene did indeed suggest that Jakobsen’s front tyre gave way, which then triggered the crash involving the Dutchman and others. Because of the incident, Jakobsen was also unable to contest the sprint in a stage ultimately won by Jonathan Milan.
