Jonathan Milan won the opening stage of the UAE Tour in Liwa last year, but in 2026 the Italian sprinter’s first day in the race ended far less happily. The Lidl–Trek rider crashed in the finale, sitting on the tarmac in frustration before eventually getting back on his bike and riding to the finish.

Milan went down behind Soudal Quick-Step sprinter and fellow Italian Alberto Dainese, who hit the deck in the final corner. The powerful Milan had nowhere to go and also came down, with Jarrad Drizners (Red Bull–BORA–hansgrohe) and Tudor leader Michael Storer among those involved as well.
After the stage — won by Isaac del Toro (UAE Team Emirates–XRG) — Lidl–Trek provided an initial medical update.

“Fortunately, an initial medical assessment after the first stage of the UAE Tour did not reveal any fractures, but Jonny’s injuries — particularly to his right hand, left elbow and hip, and right knee — will be monitored this evening and in the lead-up to tomorrow’s second stage,” the team said.
Milan’s crash is the latest setback for Lidl–Trek, who have already seen several riders hit the deck this season — including Mads Pedersen, who shared a worrying medical update earlier on Monday.
