The finish of Stage 12 of the Tour de France was marred by a serious crash.
Fernando Gaviria collided with the rear wheel of a Bahrain Victorious rider and took some of his fellow riders down with him.
Tim Merlier (Soudal Quick-Step)
won the stage ahead of Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Premier Tech) and Olav Kooij of Decathlon CMA CGM.
Gaviria hit the rear wheel of the Bahrain rider and was unable to stay upright. The Colombian crossed the finish line in the familiar “collarbone” position, while also suffering from burns across his entire left side. It does not appear that the Caja Rural Seguros sprinter will be able to continue the stage on Friday.
In addition to Gaviria, others involved in the crash included Dorian Godon (Netcompany INEOS), Jenno Berckmoes (Lotto-Intermarché), Soren Waerenskjold, Jonas Abrahamsen (Uno-X), and Pavel Bittner (Picnic PostNL) were also involved in the crash. As soon as we learn more about any injuries these riders may have sustained, we’ll report it here. Everyone was able to get back on their bikes, though.
Mike Teunissen (XDS-Astana) rode right through the middle of it all and miraculously managed to stay upright, amid the falling riders and all the equipment that had landed on the asphalt.
