Filippo Baroncini is being kept in an induced coma after crashing in the third stage of the Tour of Poland, according to Tutto Bici. The 24-year-old Italian rider from UAE Team Emirates-XRG crashed heavily into a ditch and is currently recovering from his injuries. Team boss Mauro Gianetti says Baroncini is currently in a stable condition. Baroncini, who won
the Baloise Belgium Tour in June, was the biggest victim of a crash, after which the race was neutralized. UAE quickly released
an update: "He has multiple injuries to his face, but also a broken neck vertebra. He is currently being treated in hospital and the medical team is keeping him under observation," they said. Fortunately, there is no neurological damage.
Nevertheless, Baroncini is in a serious condition, as evidenced by the fact that he has been placed in an induced coma. The impact of his crash into a wall caused fractures to his face, so the doctors in Poland decided to err on the side of caution. “He has not suffered any damage to vital organs, his life is not in danger.” Gianetti flew to Poland to be with his rider. “He is in an induced coma and his condition is stable.” A broken cheekbone, in particular, means that he will have to undergo facial surgery.

Due to numerous injuries, Baroncini only started winning in 2024
The surgery will be performed in Milan. “Filippo will arrive in Italy on Tuesday evening, after which he will quickly undergo surgery,” said Gianetti. It is not known how long Baroncini's recovery will take. After winning the world title in the U23 category in 2021, he made his WorldTour debut for the current Lidl-Trek team. In 2024, he made the switch to UAE and immediately won his first race as a professional with the SUPER 8 Classic. This year, he added the Baloise Belgium Tour to his list of achievements.
This is not the first time Baroncini has been injured in a crash. During his years as a professional, he has broken his wrist three times and his elbow once. Partly because of this, he only made his debut in a Grand Tour at the end of 2024, in the Vuelta a España. This year, he made his appearance in the Giro d'Italia and was particularly important for team leader Isaac Del Toro in the third week. His contract expires at the end of this season.
