Dylan Groenewegen hit by car during training: 'It could have been much worse'

Follow us on GoogleDylan Groenewegen was involved in a collision with a motorcycle during a training session. The Dutch sprint specialist from Unibet Rose Rockets shared the news himself on his social media channels, as Groenewegen sustained an injury and may therefore be unable to compete in the near future.

The 33-year-old Groenewegen had already been back on the road for a while, having raced in the Giro d'Italia in May and then taken a brief break after the Copenhagen Sprint in June. After a long training block, Groenewegen didn't return to racing until mid-August at the ADAC Cyclassics.
After the one-day race in Germany, he moved on to the Renewi Tour, where he didn’t come out of the race unscathed. On the second stage, Groenewegen, like many others, took a tumble, so he was unable to sprint for the win on days 2 and 3. A fourth-place finish on Day 4 was the best he could manage.
Groenewegen is currently preparing for a grueling fall race schedule, starting on September 13 in France with the GP de Fourmies. After a crash during training, the only question is whether he’ll be able to make it to that race.

Groenewegen suffers injury after collision
"Unfortunately, my training ride ended in a crash today," Groenewegen wrote on Tuesday morning. It's not entirely clear to us whether the training ride took place on Monday or Tuesday. In any case, the post was shared at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday morning.
"I was involved in a collision with a motorcyclist and suffered a muscle tear around my ribs," was the verdict. That sounds bad, but: "Fortunately, I got away without any serious injuries. I can still ride my bike."
There is, however, a big "but" to that, according to Groenewegen. "The next few days will show how the injury develops and what this means for my upcoming races. It could have been much worse, so I'm grateful for that."
