Mathieu van der Poel will line up on Friday for his fourth Tour de France. Naturally, on the eve of the Grand Départ, much of the talk is about the first week, where the Dutch rider from Alpecin-Deceuninck has multiple chances to win a stage and possibly take the yellow jersey. Meanwhile, however, the former world champion is facing heavy criticism due to a partnership with a private jet company. The fact that Van der Poel often uses private jets is no secret. For example, in December he flew to Besançon to race in a World Cup cyclo-cross just two days after his victory in Loenhout, Belgium. He also won in France, thanks in part to his mode of transport. “A day of rest and then we go again,” he explained at the time. So it’s not surprising that Van der Poel partnered with aviation company FLYINGGROUP, becoming their ambassador.
This has led to mixed reactions. Some people support it, but most of his fans have voiced their displeasure under the
Instagram post. Comparisons are being made to well-known frequent flyer Taylor Swift, but others are even harsher. “I thought he was cool, until this post,” wrote one critical voice. Others focus on the environmental impact. “It’s extremely bad for the environment. This is an example of selling out purely for money, with no concern for future generations.” The Dutchman's status as a role model is also being pointed out.

Van der Poel responds to criticism: "I understand the concerns"
It’s clear that the partnership doesn’t sit well with many fans. The criticism continued, so Van der Poel felt obliged to respond. “I understand the concerns about the environment, and I respect everyone’s choices,” he wrote in a comment under the post. “At the same time, the way I travel is extremely important for my sport and career. I work hard every day to perform at the highest level, and that means I have to make choices that protect my time, health and mental state. Flying in a more relaxed way helps me stay focused and healthy, because I experience less stress.”
According to Van der Poel, flying by private jet is purely a sporting choice. He therefore rejects the accusations that he is doing it just for the money. “This partnership isn’t about luxury. It’s about performing, recovering, and getting the support that helps me give 100% when I have to race. I try to make responsible choices when I can, but I stand by my commitment to my goals.”
