Hincapie's team shares concerns about American neo-pro (19) after serious crash at Philadelphia Classic: 'Multisystem trauma'

Modern Adventure Pro Cycling, the American ProContinental cycling team led by George Hincapie, shared a concerning medical update on Tuesday. Ezra Caudell, a 19-year-old rider on the team, suffered a serious crash last weekend during the Philadelphia Cycling Classic in the United States.

Caudell suffered a serious crash on Sunday, 90 kilometers from the finish of the race won by Tim Torn Teutenberg (Lidl-Trek). Milan Menten (Lotto-Intermarché), among others, was also involved in the high-speed crash, which visibly threw the rest of the peloton off balance for a moment.

Footage we have seen—but are not sharing out of respect for Caudell, his family, friends, and team—shows the young American lying curled up next to a lamppost, while bystanders are busy trying to contact emergency services. Caudell was then immediately transported to the hospital, his team announced right away.

Two days after the crash, Modern Adventure released an update. Ezra is still in the hospital and is receiving active treatment for the multisystem trauma he sustained in his crash during the Philadelphia Cycling Classic."

Multisystem trauma refers to a situation in which a person, as a result of a severe accident, has life-threatening injuries to multiple vital organs or body systems at the same time, such as the brain, lungs, and abdominal organs. It is not known what the situation is with Caudell.

"He has a fantastic team that is dedicated body and soul, and his family is at his bedside," Modern Adventure adds. "We are grateful for all the sympathy and the continued expressions of support."

Caudell, a 19-year-old who comes from a mountain biking background, has been riding as a pro for Modern Adventure since the start of this season. The 2-meter-tall American has competed in races including the UAE Tour, Kuurne–Brussels–Kuurne, Paris–Roubaix, and, more recently, the Tour of Denmark and the Arctic Race of Norway.
