Javier Romo has left Movistar. The 27-year-old Spaniard has decided to continue his career with Netcompany INEOS, a team that has been very active in the transfer market. After several impressive seasons racing in Spain, he has signed a two-year contract with the British team.

Netcompany INEOS add another climber to their roster in the shape of Romo.

Romo has been a professional cyclist for 5 years

Romo turned pro with Astana–Premier Tech in 2021, but after three years with Alexandre Vinokourov, he chose to join Movistar.
In 2025, he had a major breakthrough there, claiming his first—and so far only—professional victory in a stage of the Tour Down Under. He also came close to a stage win twice in that year’s Vuelta a España: in Stage 12, he was beaten by Juan Ayuso.
This year was a bit less impressive, but in the Tour of the Basque Country, the Spaniard made a splash by closing the gap on Paul Seixas and Florian Lipowitz.

Netcompany INEOS see big potential in Romo

But just at that moment, he was brought down by a reckless spectator. Otherwise, Romo was somewhat inconspicuous, but Netcompany INEOS sees plenty of potential in the Spanish climber.
"I'm incredibly excited to join Netcompany INEOS and start this new chapter in my career," he says on his new team's website.
"I'm grateful for the trust the team has placed in me, and I'm determined to make the most of this opportunity. I’m ready to work hard, give it my all, and do my part to help the team achieve its goals. I can’t wait to get started.”

Romo is the eighth addition to Netcompany INEOS

Romo’s arrival marks Netcompany INEOS’s eighth signing for 2027. Benjamin Noval and Markel Beloki are two other Spanish climbers who will be riding for the team.
INEOS has also signed Joe Blackmore, James Shaw, Riley Sheehan, Harold Tejada, and Clément Champoussin.
They aren’t exactly world-class riders—and neither is Romo. But Head of Racing Geraint Thomas believes he has a lot of potential.\

Thomas: 'He adds a lot of quality to the team'

"Javier is a rock-solid rider who has impressed us ever since he entered the cycling world," says the Welshman.
"He has proven himself at the WorldTour level and has developed into an experienced all-rounder who can make a difference in a variety of races.
He adds a lot of quality to the team, gives us more options throughout the season, and we’re really looking forward to working with him."
