Joshua Tarling has won the individual time trial on day two of the Giro d’Italia. The powerful INEOS Grenadiers rider was just one second faster than Primoz Roglic (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe), claiming the victory in the race against the clock.
The time trial turned into a game of seconds. In the first hour, Daan Hoole (Lidl-Trek), Edoardo Affini (Visma | Lease a Bike), and Jay Vine (UAE Team Emirates) posted the fastest times, with very tight gaps between them.
That trend continued in the final hour. Tarling edged past Vine’s time, but the GC contenders were still to come. None of them managed to beat Tarling, though Roglic came incredibly close, just one second behind.
Roglic did, however, gain valuable time in the fight for the maglia rosa. The big question was how fast Wout van Aert (Visma | Lease a Bike) and Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) would be. Van Aert didn’t deliver his best performance, lacked power, and couldn’t threaten the top times. Pedersen, wearing the pink jersey, got close, but not close enough. The gap was tight, but he ultimately lost the pink jersey to Roglic by a small margin.
