The routes for the Tour de France and the Tour de France Femmes were unveiled this week. Nine stages await the women, including a team time trial and the Puy-de-Dôme—a beautiful route. Marlen Reusser, however, is disappointed—not so much because of the lack of time trial kilometers, but because of another imbalance.

The Swiss rider commented on the course during the presentation. “It’s a great event,” Reusser told CyclingWeekly. Then came the criticism. “What I am a little disappointed about is that it’s the Tour de France and the Tour de France Femmes. Where is the Tour de France Hommes? I find that strange. I don’t get it.”
Reusser also noticed on the podium during the presentation that the men’s Tour de France is treated differently than the women’s.

“We have two good race directors, but I don’t feel like they’re on the same level. It’s more like the men’s race director is on the podium, with the women’s race director standing right next to him.”

Of course, she also sees that the Tour de France Femmes has brought about major changes. But there’s room for improvement.

“I think the Tour is doing a fantastic job and showing that there’s more to sports than just men’s sports. We talk about it a lot, but we should just do it more often. I hope these small steps are also taken when it comes to the presentation and the whole event.”

Rousse and Prudhomme respond to Reusser

Marion Rousse, the race director of the Tour de France Femmes, then responded to Reusser’s comments. She had previously stated that the double Grand Départ—which takes place in the United Kingdom for both men and women—is a sign of equality.

She also addressed the issue of the shorter presentation. “The presentation for the men naturally takes longer, because there are 21 stages compared to nine.”
And so the Tour de France Femmes has not been portrayed as less important, according to the Frenchwoman. Christian Prudhomme, race director for the men’s event, also responded to Reusser.

“The Tour de France is a major cycling race that has been held since 1903. The Tour is the Tour, and we’re incredibly happy that there’s another race: the Tour de France Femmes.”
The fact that the tournaments are somewhat separate is just the way it is.

“The Tour is essentially a single event consisting of two parts. We’re not talking about Roland Garros for men and Roland Garros for women—we’re just talking about Roland Garros. For us, the only problem is that we can’t organize both events at the same time. That’s impossible. It’s not like a tennis match where you play to the right first and then to the left.”
Prudhomme also sees that Rousse is competitive and eager to make the Tour de France Femmes shine, even more so than the men’s Tour.
“I don’t blame her—after all, it is the Tour. The strength of this event, the women’s event, is the Tour de France. And the Tour de France Femmes is good for women’s sports. Above all, it’s good for the Tour, period.”
