Tim Wellens had already taken the win, but behind the Belgian champion three riders were set to sprint for second place. Tom Pidcock, Jan Christen and Maxim Van Gils were battling it out for the remaining podium spots, when things went badly wrong for the Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe rider. Van Gils hit the deck hard and stayed down for a long time.

Behind Wellens, it was Pidcock who launched the sprint first. Christen and Van Gils tried to come around, but the Swiss rider (UAE Team Emirates–XRG) shut the door aggressively. Van Gils got squeezed and could not avoid the barriers, resulting in a heavy crash. He remained on the ground and only got back to his feet around five minutes later, clearly in pain.
More later.
