Remco Evenepoel is the new European champion, but a new video shows just how close he came to throwing it away. Footage filmed from the roadside on the Mozjanca climb is doing the rounds on social media, and it captures the moment the Belgian slid out in a bend at the top of the climb with 36 kilometres to go. It also shows who helped him back up. And even that, it seems, was not fast enough for Evenepoel.

According to Sporza, the new images show Evenepoel getting back on his feet with the help of a policewoman. The Belgian broadcaster describes him as "untameable" (ontembaar): he was back on his bike quickly, but he clearly could not get going again quickly enough for his own liking.

A counter-attack that went too fast

The crash came on the fourth of five local laps on Sunday, on the Mozjanca, the climb that decided the race. RTBF puts it at 2.1 kilometres at an average of 10.2 percent.

With 36.3 kilometres to go, Giulio Ciccone attacked. As Het Laatste Nieuws pointed out, the Italian was the first name Evenepoel mentioned the day before when he was asked about his rivals. The 26-year-old saw the danger, jumped straight onto the move and, instead of sitting on the wheel, went straight past Ciccone. The Italian held on and the pair were away together.
Not for long. In a left-hand bend at the top of the Mozjanca, Evenepoel slid out. RTBF writes that he arrived in the corner far too fast, though he was fortunately not badly hurt.

Fifteen seconds standing still

Evenepoel stood still for around fifteen seconds, according to Het Laatste Nieuws. In that time, the small group containing his Belgian teammates Debruyne and Van Gils came past, and he latched on at the back.
Up front, Ciccone realised that going it alone would be very tough and eased off. That allowed Evenepoel to return to the head of the race, and shortly afterwards he attacked again. Once more, only Ciccone could follow.
The duel was settled only on the line. Evenepoel beat Ciccone in a photo finish to claim the European road title in a heart-stopping sprint. Seen in the new footage, the scramble on the Mozjanca looks even more like the moment the race could have slipped away from him.
