The organizers of the Vuelta a España have released the points structure for the upcoming edition. In yet another brutal mountainous edition of the race, only the winners of stages 1 and 21 will receive the maximum haul of 50 points, according to the official breakdown. Unipublic has divided the stages into six groups. Group 1 includes the stages considered very easy, while the brutally hard mountain stages are placed in Group 5. Group 6 is reserved for individual time trials, note that the team time trial on stage four will not award any points toward the green jersey.
Only two stages, Stage 1 in Turin and the finale in Madrid, are classified as flat, meaning sprinters will have very few chances to score big. In hilly and mountain stages, the maximum number of points available at the finish is 30 and 20, respectively.
Last year’s green jersey went to Kaden Groves, who will not be lining up for this year’s race.
