The Giro d'Italia has only just ended, but the preparation for the Tour de France is already beginning! The Critérium du Dauphiné is traditionally the ideal French race to test your legs and optimally prepare for the big event! IDLProCycling.com is more than happy to guide you through all the ins and outs!

Last year, the Dauphiné turned into a Jumbo-Visma show. Wout van Aert claimed two stage victories and stood on the podium twice, while Primoz Roglic secured the overall victory. Roglic, the newly crowned winner of the Giro d'Italia, crossed the finish line hand in hand with Jonas Vingegaard in the final mountain stage. The Danish rider went on to win the Tour de France a month later and will also be participating this year.

No easy start to ease into things in this edition. The organization immediately opts for a hilly stage around Chambon-sur-Lac. The highlight of the local laps is the Côte du Rocher de l'Aigle (1 km at 7.3 percent), where pure sprinters could easily get left behind. Can we expect fireworks right from the start?

Punchers beware! You are given an early opportunity here! The third stage is perhaps the easiest of the entire race. However, it wouldn't be the Dauphiné if there wasn't a small climb waiting around twenty kilometers from the finish. Nonetheless, normally this should be a stage for the sprinters.

Favorites general classification Critérium du Dauphiné 2023

No Tadej Pogacar, but Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) is the immediate top favorite for the overall classification. The Danish Tour winner has already comfortably claimed victories in O Gran Camiño and the Tour of the Basque Country this season. Vingegaard encounters a course that suits him perfectly and should now be in top form for the Tour...

His main competition seems to be the pure climbers. In the final weekend, significant time gaps can be created. The Spanish reliability of Enric Mas (Movistar) and Mikel Landa (Bahrain Victorious) poses a real threat to Vingegaard. Both riders have had an excellent season, although they lost some ground to the incredibly strong Dane in the Tour of the Basque Country. David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ), who finished ahead of Vingegaard in Paris-Nice, will be eager to repeat that feat, while Adam Yates (UAE-Team Emirates) likely sought some insights from Pogacar.

Enric Mas, with Mikel Landa in the background

Does Spanish solidity count? We believe it does, as Richard Carapaz (EF-Education EasyPost) and Daniel Felipe Martínez (INEOS Grenadiers) should not be underestimated in the high mountains. So far in 2023, Carapaz and Martínez haven't reached their desired performance level, but they are gradually showing some improvements. Carapaz, in particular, impressively won the Mercan'Tour Classic Alpes-Maritimes.

The true dark horse for the overall victory? Jai Hindley (BORA-hansgrohe). We're talking about the 2022 Giro d'Italia winner - a climber through and through. The Australian will make his Tour de France debut in July and aims to make an immediate impact. Don't count him out - and don't count out guys like Giulio Ciccone (Trek-Segafredo), Ben O'Connor (AG2R Citroën Team), Matteo Jorgenson (Movistar) and Carlos Rodríguez (INEOS Grenadiers) either. For Ciccone and O'Connor, their performance is uncertain as they are returning from COVID-19 infection and injury setbacks. However, they have the potential to challenge the top contenders. Let's not forget that O'Connor finished third last year behind Roglic and Vingegaard...
