Reports in the French press have hinted that the Tour de France 2027 may skip the thrilling detour over Montmartre in the final stage next year. It has been reported that the race will return to the traditional Champs Elysées sprint for the first time since 2023. The official route is yet to be announced.

Will we see a pure sprinter win in Paris again?

For the past two years, the race has tackled the punchy cobbled climb of Montmartre in Paris. It has suited the classics riders, with Wout van Aert and Mathieu van der Poel winning respectively.

The climb also featured in the Paris 2024 Olympic road race, where Evenepoel exploded the race and stormed to a win. That year, the final stage of the Tour de France took place in Nice, in order to avoid clashing with Olympic preparations in the capital.

Therefore, it has been a while since a pure sprinter has won the final stage of the Tour, with Jordi Meeus taking the win in 2024.

GC neutralisation could be driving factor in stage change

Both years the race has climbed Montmartre, the general classification has been neutralised, meaning Tadej Pogačar has raced all out.
This could be seen to 'spoil' the celebratory nature of the final stage, which traditionally saw the yellow jersey sip champagne and revel in the overall win.
Perhaps the organisers of the tour wish to return to this atmosphere, by ruling out the likelihood of all-out racing among the GC men in Paris.

Plans for the future remain uncertain

The addition of Montmartre has been widely well-received; race favourites have been welcomed with crowds 5 or 6 rows deep upon entering the 18th arrondissement.
On the other hand, some fans have lamented the death of stages built for pure sprinters, perhaps remembering the golden age of Cavendish, Kittel, and Greipel.
