With the Tour of Lombardy this coming weekend, the 2026 road season is winding down. There's no time to rest though, as rumours about the 2027 Giro d'Italia are circulating ahead of the official route announcement in November. Next week, the Grande Partenza will be announced, but it is already being reported that the first Grand Tour of the year will start in Trieste. Will Pogačar be lured to Giro d'Italia by Slovenian stage?
The first stages of the Giro d'Italia will be starting in Trieste, in the north east corner of Italy. It has been reported by
Il Messaggero Veneto, and
cyclinguptodate, that the race's opening stages will include a loop into Slovenia.
Trieste was passed over in favour of Albania for the Grande Partenza in 2025, and has featured four times as a stage finish city. Luka Mezgec last won there in 2014, the year that Nairo Quintana won the maglia rosa.

will Pogačar race the Giro again next year?
Trieste is on a narrow strip of Italian territory lying between the Adriatic Sea and Slovenia; Slovenia lies close, at approximately 8 kilometres east and 10–15 kilometres southeast of the city.
Return of iconic Froome-era climb
It is said the race will also feature the iconic Monte Zoncolan from the Ovaro side on stage 20. It was last raced in 2018, when Chris Froome, who went on to win the overall GC went solo. And the stats don't lie:
| Length | 10.1 km |
| Elevation Gain | 1,203 meters |
| Average Gradient | 12% |
| Maximum Gradient | 22% |
From 2 kilometres into the climb, up to kilometre 7, the gradient never drops below 15%.
Could we see defending champion Jonas Vingegaard return to battle this monstrous climb?
