At one point, it seemed like Tadej Pogačar might start the European Cycling Championships in Slovenia, and the Tour of Lombardy. In the end, it wasn't to be. The Slovenian rider from UAE Emirates-XRG has officially wrapped up his 2026 season, but we might just see him back in action early in 2027.

Speaking to RTVSLO , Pogacar told the international media that he wasn’t in good enough shape and discussed his recovery in more detail following his serious crash in the Vuelta a España. “The first two weeks were pretty tough; there weren’t many good days,” said the Slovenian.
"In the third week, when I started moving again, went to the gym, and saw a physical therapist, I somehow got my body back on track, and now everything is back to normal," says Pogacar, who, understandably, did lose some of his fitness.

Pogacar begins his preparation a month earlier

In the end, he came to terms with the fact that he wouldn’t be able to race anymore this season. “It’s fine now. I can ride again. The season is already over, and I can’t compete anymore. I’m taking some time for myself and will start preparing for the 2027 season at a leisurely pace.”
"Maybe I can really rest a little longer, but I’ll also start training earlier than usual. I’ll start about a month earlier," Pogacar admits. The Slovenian would have liked to have ridden the Tour Down Under this year—one of the few races he hasn’t yet won. His early training regime could be a sign that he’s aiming to compete in 2027.

Gianetti: 'It's too early to say'

Team manager Mauro Gianetti had already been asked that question by Daniel Benson. “It’s still too early to say anything about that. Next year is an important season with the Tour de France and the World Championships. Since the World Championships take place before the Vuelta, everything changes. We need to think this through carefully, because the main goal remains the Tour, and his season needs to be planned well.”
"We'll see. We wanted him to finish the season and then go on vacation. In November and December, we’ll come up with a solid plan. Once we have a plan, we always look at the whole year and the long term for Tadej. Every year, he needs to recharge his batteries, and we have to try to look two or three years ahead.”
