Harold Martin López has won the third stage of the Tour of Hungary. López, who had already shown great form in the Tour of Turkey, proved to be the strongest on the final climb and secured more valuable points for his team in the battle for the points classification.
After two sprint stages, today it was finally the climbers’ turn in the Tour of Hungary. Yesterday, it was once again Danny van Poppel who proved to be the fastest in the sprint, but stage two will mainly be remembered for the
massive crash that occurred 130 kilometers from the finish in the peloton. Among the worst affected were Sam Welsford and Pablo Torres, who were forced to abandon the race.
But the race never stops, at least that’s what six riders from the peloton thought, as they launched an early attack in the third stage of the 2.Pro stage race. The breakaway quickly built a solid lead and, with 130 kilometers still to go, had nearly a three-minute advantage over the peloton as the first climb of the day slowly approached.

Breakaway survives the first climb of the day
At the base of the second-category climb, the six leaders still had a decent gap, although the lead had dwindled to just under two minutes. The peloton wasn’t able to get much closer, so the six attackers still had a comfortable advantage by the time they reached the summit.
Whether that margin would be enough to reach the final climb first was still uncertain. After all, the descent was followed by a long valley of nearly 50 kilometers before the riders would hit the final ascent. However, the breakaway handled the valley well, and with 30 kilometers to go, their lead was still more than a minute and a half, making it very likely they would be the first to reach the final climb.

Leaders quickly caught on final climb, man in form López wins
The breakaway riders were the first to reach the final climb, but with only a 30-second lead, they knew the end was near. On the decisive Hungarian ascent, the last attacker was soon reeled in by a heavily reduced peloton.
Things remained calm for a while on the final climb, allowing a group of about thirty riders to enter the last five kilometers together. Even with three kilometers to go, many riders still had hopes of taking the stage win. But then
XDS Astana and UAE Team Emirates turned up the pace, triggering the expected selection.
It was Harold Martin López who launched the first attack with two kilometers to go. The man in form immediately opened up a solid gap and entered the final kilometer with a comfortable lead. Although the chasers seemed to close in for a moment, the climber held on and crossed the line first, securing more valuable points for his team.
