During the major crash on the second day of the Vuelta a España, almost the entire Visma | Lease a Bike team hit the asphalt. Team leader Jonas Vingegaard crashed, but quickly signaled to the camera that everything was okay. Things looked less promising for Axel Zingle. We saw the Frenchman get into the ambulance, get out again, and continue riding. What we didn't see, however, was very special. There was a crash on a rain-soaked roundabout, sending many riders to the asphalt. “It was pretty slippery because of the rain, and Jonas (Vingegaard, ed.) had to pee, so we dropped back a bit in the peloton,” Zingle said in the
flash interview. “We had just repositioned ourselves when the crash happened. I don't know which rider crashed first, but we were behind him, couldn't brake, and slipped.”
Although it looked pretty bad on TV when we saw Zingle trying to put his arm or shoulder back in place, the French sprinter himself says it's ‘nothing serious’. ‘Unfortunately, I dislocated my shoulder, and we had to put it back before I could continue. I wanted to keep going, but because I didn't know how to put it back myself, I had to ask for help.’

"He had run off with my bike"
After the ambulance crew had put his shoulder back in place, Zingle was able to continue. Not for long, though, as he had a second setback. “Then something amusing happened to me: I wanted to grab a gel, and my shoulder dislocated again, so I had to stop again. There was a man who didn't speak English very well, so I gave him my bike while I got into the ambulance to have my shoulder put back in place.”
That turned out not to have been the best idea. “When I came out, my bike was gone, so I had to wait five to ten minutes because he had run off with it. That gave me quite a shock,” laughs Zingle.
In the end, the rider born in Mulhouse crossed the finish line in Limone Piemonte in last place, just over 24 minutes behind his teammate and stage winner Vingegaard. Zingle has already experienced more setbacks this season, but he remains positive. “It's another setback this season, but it won't stop me. I don't want to stop here; I'm going to try to keep going.”
