Tragedy in Spain: Ivan Melendez Luque (17) dies after serious crash

Shocking news from Spain, where junior cyclist Ivan Melendez Luque died on Saturday. The 17-year-old Spaniard was involved in a crash in the peloton in the Vuelta Junior Ribera del Duero and could not be saved by the emergency services.
Melendez Luque, riding for Tenerife-Cabberty, was one of the victims of a major crash in the second stage of the race. He was clearly in a serious condition and was resuscitated, but to no avail.
The second stage was canceled after the severity of the accident became clear, and Sunday's third stage will also not take place.
The UCI has also issued a statement. "The UCI deeply mourns the tragic passing of Spanish rider Iván Meléndez Luque (Tenerife-Cabberty U19 Team), who succumbed to injuries sustained today in a crash at the @VueltaRibera in Spain. We extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and the cycling community."

- Maybe I was a bit disrespectful to Heiden. What he did was unique and exceptional but he wasn't the only one who combined those distances, nowadays it is just not possible and nobody competes in both distances. The same is true for cycling with for example the combination of Roubaix and de Tour de France.
