UAE claims victory and overall title in the final stage of the Tour of Britain

UAE Team Emirates-XRG clinched victory in the Tour of Britain with an unprecedentedly dominant performance. The team completely tore the peloton apart in the hilly section, after which Wellens secured the overall victory. Nils Politt put the icing on the cake with a stage win.

On the final day of the Tour of Britain, the riders faced another challenging stage. The route to and from Earlston was virtually devoid of flat sections. The stage was particularly difficult around the halfway point, with a series of steep hills coming one after another in quick succession. The final seventy kilometers, on the other hand, were much easier, even though the finish was by no means flat.

Tim Wellens started the final stage as the overall leader, but the UAE Team Emirates-XRG rider was by no means in the clear. Wellens could still feel the heat from Lewis Askey (NSN Cycling), who was just 21 seconds behind the Belgian in the overall standings. The local rider undoubtedly wanted to make one last push for the overall victory. However, Wellens had the advantage of a rock-solid team, including Nils Politt, Florian Vermeersch, and Benoit Cosnefroy.

Four riders formed the breakaway of the day. Ben Wiggins, the son of former Tour winner Bradley Wiggins, was the best-known name among them. The quartet built up a lead of around two minutes. In the peloton, Soudal-Quick Step and Decathlon CMA CGM joined UAE in controlling the race. The latter two teams saw an opportunity for a second stage win by Tim Merlier and Olav Kooij, respectively.

Whether Merlier and Kooij would sprint for the win, however, remained very much in question, as the racing was intense in the hilly section. After the first climb, there was even a brief moment when a group of fifteen favorites had formed. Although the group quickly swelled back to forty riders, the pace certainly didn’t let up. As a result, the breakaway riders saw their lead shrink to less than a minute.

It was mainly UAE that pushed the pace; they wanted to secure the overall victory for Wellens. After another surge, five riders from UAE broke away from a group of seven. The group of seven consisted of Wellens, Cosnefroy Politt, Mikkel Bjerg, and Vermeersch (all from UAE), as well as the Netcompany INEOS duo of Filippo Ganna and Connor Swift.

As a result, with seventy kilometers to go, the race was in full swing. The seven-rider group, dominated by UAE, caught up with the early breakaway and already had a forty-second lead over a chasing group. That group included Askey, as well as Kooij, who held his own well in the fray. Merlier, on the other hand, was nowhere to be seen.

However, Kooij also faced an extremely difficult challenge, as the UAE team’s lead had grown to one minute. Moreover, the Dutchman had the support of only one teammate, Daan Hoole. As a result, everything went smoothly for UAE: Wellens was on his way to the overall victory, and the team was poised to win the final stage.

The chasing group, in fact, would not return. The gap continued to fluctuate between one minute and 1 minute and 20 seconds. As a result, the front-runners could dream of winning the stage. One problem for UAE, however, was the presence of Ganna, who, on paper, was the fastest in the sprint.

However, the UAE riders skillfully resolved that problem. With ten kilometers to go, they took turns launching attacks. While Ganna was initially able to regain control of the situation, he had no answer to an attack by Politt. The German broke away and rode solo to the stage victory. With Wellens’ overall victory to top it off, the team’s celebration was complete.
