Mathieu van der Poel has announced his spring schedule. The Dutchman is currently in Spain following his successful pursuit of his sixth world title in cyclo-cross. The world champion will be seen exclusively in one-day races until the end of April, starting on March 16th in Milan-San Remo. Van der Poel triumphed in San Remo a year ago, breaking away from everyone on the Poggio. He hopes to repeat that feat now. After the first Monument of 2024, the traditional build-up to the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix follows. This means he will also participate in the E3 Saxo Classic and Gent-Wevelgem.
After Paris-Roubaix, Van der Poel continues for two more weeks. We will see him in action in the Ardennes at the Amstel Gold Race, which he won in 2019 and in which he finished fourth in 2022. A week later, he attempts Liège-Bastogne-Liège for the second time in his career. He once finished sixth in 2020.
Van der Poel adds Gent-Wevelgem to his schedule and skips Strade Bianche and Tirreno
A year ago, Van der Poel started one week earlier in the Strade Bianche and then competed in the Tirreno-Adriatico. Neither of these races are on his schedule now, nor is Paris-Nice. The other races on his current calendar are the same as last year, except for Gent-Wevelgem.
Alpecin-Deceuninck announced the spring program of its lead rider on Friday, at the Deceuninck headquarters in Hooglede-Gits. After the spring, Van der Poel has a busy summer ahead. The Olympic Games, held only once every four years, are the main event for the Dutchman, and much has to be sacrificed for it.
