Jonas Vingegaard has undergone surgery, but Visma say his season may already be over

Follow us on GoogleJonas Vingegaard has successfully undergone surgery for his broken collarbone. The 29-year-old Dane from Visma | Lease a Bike went under the knife on Tuesday, team manager Marc Reef told Eurosport. There is a chance we won’t see Vingegaard in action again this season.

Stage 15 of the Tour de France marked the end of the race for Vingegaard last Sunday. The Dane took a hard fall in the final stretch after a roundabout and landed on his shoulder. It was immediately clear that something was wrong. With his arm in a sling, Vingegaard made his way to the ambulance.
At the finish line, the medical team determined that she had a broken collarbone, and she underwent surgery on Tuesday to repair the fracture. “The surgery went well; they did what they had to do. It’s not the most complicated procedure, either,” said Reef.

Visma | Lease a Bike is set to meet with Vingegaard
After a grueling stretch of racing—during which Vingegaard won the Giro d'Italia and was in contention for victory in the Tour de France—Visma | Lease a Bike is giving its team leader all the time he needs to recover. Normally, he wouldn't be back on the bike in just a few weeks.
"We'll have to discuss plans for the rest of the season with Jonas after the Tour de France," Reef said. "It's been a difficult season. It's possible that Vingegaard will return to the peloton this year, but it's also possible that he won't."

Vingegaard won three stage races in 2026
It would be an abrupt end to a year in which Vingegaard still managed to win quite a few races. He started his season in March at Paris-Nice, after having to miss the UAE Tour in February due to illness. He won Paris-Nice and went on to win the Tour of Catalonia as well.
It turned out to be his last stage race before the start of the Giro d'Italia, which he dominated in May with a total of five (!) stage wins. After another training block, he was in better shape than ever at the start of the Tour, but in France he came up against an even better Tadej Pogacar.
Vingegaard started the fifteenth stage in second place in the general classification, battling with Visma | Lease a Bike for the stage win and perhaps some time gain on Pogacar. It didn’t come to that, however; the adventure for both teams ended in a tricky right-hand turn.
