Visma | Lease a Bike was dealt a serious blow on Thursday in the first mountain stage between Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogacar. The Danish leader of the Dutch team lost more than two minutes, but his teammates remain confident in him.
Vingegaard got straight back on his bike after the stage to cycle back to the team bus and did not give any interviews. Matteo Jorgenson, on the other hand, did answer some questions at the finish, where he said he had had a bad day and that there were no excuses. The American dropped to tenth place in the GC.
Tiesj Benoot was in the leading group of the day on behalf of the team. "Jonas is disappointed, but he is still second. This was not a good day for us, but the Tour is still far from over," the experienced Belgian told Sporza.
Benoot does not blame Vingegaard. “You can make lots of plans, but in the end, it's your legs that count. So I don't think we made any mistakes, but we were up against a stronger rider,” he said. “It will be important to recover well, because tomorrow he has to fight hard again.”

Visma | Lease a Bike is not giving up yet

“We'll make new plans,” Benoot said firmly. “First, we'll evaluate today, and then we'll move forward again. I'm still motivated. Sepp Kuss made a similar comment to TV2. “I haven't spoken to Jonas yet, so I don't know how he felt, but I do not doubt that he can be proud of his performance. We'll have to see what we do in the future.”
“It was a fair race. We can be satisfied with our efforts, but you always hope for a better day. Ultimately, there was a significant difference, so it is a fair result. There are more stages to come, and you never know when the momentum will shift,” said Kuss.
