Matthew Brennan was probably the fastest man in the race in the Coppa Bernocchi, but the 20-year-old Brit did not wait for a possible bunch sprint. The rider from Visma | Lease a Bike, along with the rest of the team, rode an extremely aggressive race, but unfortunately, it was not rewarded with a victory. Nonetheless, the performance is a good sign.
Even before the real finale had begun, teammate Sepp Kuss had already set off on an adventure. Later, it was Brennan himself who attacked and closed the gap with the leading group. This gave Visma | Lease a Bike two riders at the front. “I felt good today,” said team leader Brennan on the team's website. “We stuck to our pre-race plan: to stay alert in the decisive moments, and that went well.”
Kuss was riding his second race since the Vuelta a España and showed himself to great effect on roads that were quite atypical for him. “Sepp was really strong and reacted perfectly when Michael Matthews tried to stir things up. I then waited for the right moment to bridge across.”
This put Visma | Lease a Bike in an excellent position, but in the flat final, it was a losing battle for the leading group. “Our group worked well together, but so did the peloton. The team tried to disrupt the chase behind, but unfortunately, that wasn’t enough. It’s a pity we were caught in the end.”

The win went to French champion Dorian Godon.

Brennan satisfied despite lack of results: "We can be proud"

The breakaway riders were caught with less than 3 kilometers to go, after which Brennan tried to ride away on his own. When that didn't work, the young Brit had nothing left in his legs to sprint. “Still, we can be proud of the effort we put in today. We gave it everything, even if we couldn’t finish it off with a win.”
However, a 60th place in Legnano is far from telling the whole story of his race. The very young sprinter, who has already won 12 times this season, once again showed that he is more than just a fast man. Kuss can also look back on a very strong race, which offers a lot of perspective for the Tour of Lombardy, should he start in Como.
