It’s official:
Jonas Vingegaard won’t race another kilometer in 2026. The Dane from
Visma | Lease a Bike crashed hard during the Tour de France and had to return home with a broken collarbone. He’s still
dealing with the aftereffects, and the Dutch team has now put an end to any doubts about how his year will end. The two-time Tour winner is now fully focused on next season.
In 2026, Vingegaard went all out for victory in the Tour de France. With an alternative build-up, he hoped to secure his third Tour victory: he won the Giro d’Italia and hoped that would give him the stamina needed for another yellow jersey. But after two weeks, he was already trailing his rival Tadej Pogacar by a significant margin. The final week was where he needed to make up that deficit, but it never came to that.
He took a hard fall during the fifteenth stage and had to withdraw from the race with a broken collarbone. There had been uncertainty about his fall season, but Visma | Lease a Bike has announced the bad news
in a press release. “Jonas Vingegaard will not race for Visma | Lease a Bike again this season. He is still feeling the effects of the collarbone fracture he sustained in the Tour de France. As a result, it is not possible for him to work toward new goals in the short term.”
So there won’t be an autumn season for Vingegaard, who had been considering competing in the World Cycling Championships in Montreal. But once again, he will not be participating in a world championship final. “His focus will be entirely on recovery and training in the coming period. We hope this will allow him to lay the groundwork for a new, successful season.”

Vingegaard is fully focused on 2027
Vingegaard is naturally disappointed, but he’s also being realistic. “After a long and intense racing season, I had already planned a recovery period following the Tour de France. The broken collarbone delayed the start of my training period, so it won’t be possible to return to top form in the near future. The focus is now on preparing as best as possible for the goals of 2027. I’ll be discussing these goals with the team in the coming period.”
Team manager Marc Reef explains the decision. “As mentioned at the start of the season, we were going to assess how the rest of the season would look after the Tour de France. After a busy period with many race days and his collarbone fracture, it’s better for him to focus on 2027. Together with Jonas, we’ll work on the right training plan leading up to his goals for the new year.'
