Primož Roglič was set to compete in the Vuelta a España with his sights set on a strong overall finish, but a crash during training threw a spanner in his plans. His preparation was far from ideal, and it remained to be seen whether the Slovenian—who already has four overall victories in Spain to his credit—would be able to make the start. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the decision has been made.

Roglic skipped the Giro d'Italia and the Tour de France. The Slovenian had already competed in the Tirreno-Adriatico (fifth), the Tour de Romandie (eighteenth), and the Tour de Suisse (eighth), among others, but took a short break after the Slovenian National Championships. He was set to prepare for the Vuelta through the Clásica de San Sebastián and the Tour of Burgos.
But even before August had arrived, things went completely wrong for the 36-year-old general classification rider. He was hit by a car during a training ride and was in a lot of pain in his leg. This meant he had to skip the Spanish preparatory races anyway, and the Vuelta a España also became a problem. Would he even be able to compete in his beloved race?

According to La Gazzetta, the decision has been made by the rider and his team, Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe. His condition has improved, and Roglic reportedly feels fit enough to start in Monaco. The German team will therefore include him in the roster, but they will have to adjust their ambitions: reportedly, he will no longer be competing for the general classification.

Nys Will Also Be Fit in Time for the Vuelta

Thibau Nys is having an even tougher season. The young Belgian from Lidl-Trek had to sit out the classics and has been struggling with injuries all year, but he also recently fell ill. He had toxoplasmosis and had to skip the Clásica de San Sebastián as well. So far this season, Nys had only seven race days under his belt, but his participation in the Vuelta was in jeopardy.
But just like Roglic, the Belgian puncheur will be at the start of the Vuelta a España, according to Het Laatste Nieuws. It would mark his debut in the Spanish race and his second Grand Tour of his career. Mattias Skjelmose and Mads Pedersen will also be competing for Lidl-Trek, which is heading to Monaco with a strong team of all-rounders.
