Primoz Roglic's participation in the Vuelta a España '50-50' after training crash

Primož Roglič has won the Vuelta a España no fewer than four times. The Slovenian would love to make that five this year, but according to well-informed cycling journalist Ciro Scognamiglio, his participation may be in jeopardy. The Red Bull rider crashed in the run-up to the Vuelta a España, and according to the Italian journalist, his chances of competing are at around 50 percent.

From 2019 through 2021, Roglič won the Vuelta a España three years in a row, and then went on to win it a fourth time in 2024. That last victory came while riding for Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe, the team he joined after years with Visma. However, he has faced difficult years at the German team in 2025 and 2026.

Or at least: he wasn’t the great Roglič we’d seen in previous years. On top of that, the Slovenian also had to deal with frequent mechanical issues and injuries. Unfortunately for him, things were no different in the run-up to the Vuelta, which starts in Monaco in just under two weeks.

Roglic recently crashed during training after being hit by a car. After winning the national time trial title in Slovenia, he had set his sights on the Vuelta, but he suffered a setback during his preparations. As a result, he had to skip both the Clásica de San Sebastián and the Vuelta a Burgos.

In typical fashion, Roglic spoke out after his crash. “Not an ideal scenario, but that’s life, isn’t it? Now all eyes are on the Vuelta. We’ll keep working, and hopefully things will turn around then,” the Slovenian said. However, it remains to be seen whether Roglič will make it to the start in Monaco.

Scognamiglio, a journalist for the Italian newspaper *Gazzetta Dello Sport*, had some news about Roglič on X on Saturday. The usually well-informed journalist reported that he had heard from sources that Roglic’s participation in the Vuelta was a 50-50 proposition. With the race set to start in less than two weeks, that’s not very reassuring, of course.
