Nordhagen had already underlined his form with sixth place on Jebel Hafeet on Saturday, strengthening his position in the general classification. On Sunday, he and the team safely negotiated the flat finale in Abu Dhabi, a stage that was won by Jonathan Milan.

“That was also the only instruction we gave the riders today: get across the line safely, and we did that well,” said sports director Maarten Wynants on the team website. “The original plan was to start with Jonas. His absence gave others the opportunity, and Jørgen seized that chance with both hands.”

“Great to start the season like this. At the decisive moments for the general classification, I was there every time,” Nordhagen said. “Beforehand it was difficult to set a target. “The climbs were longer and harder than in Guangxi and the level was higher. The team supported me really well there,” he added. “This is a nice step in my development. With a good winter in Spain and this week in my legs, I want to take another step again after a new altitude camp.” Nordhagen’s next race is normally expected to be the Volta a Catalunya, this time with Vingegaard set to return.
