The cycling world's focus was understandably on Strade Bianche on Saturday, but there was plenty of racing elsewhere in Europe as well. Ellen van Dijk secured victory in the Vuelta a Extremadura for Lidl-Trek, while Matteo Moschetti (Q36.5) claimed the win at the GP Criquelion.
We start our roundup close to home, in Lessines, where the GP Criquelion ended in a bunch sprint on Sunday. Moschetti proved to be the fastest, securing his second victory of the season for Q36.5 after also winning the final stage of the AlUla Tour. Hugo Hofstetter (Israel-Premier Tech) finished second, while Giacomo Nizzolo, Moschetti's teammate, took third place.
In Spain, the final stage of the Vuelta a Extremadura was shortened due to poor weather conditions. There, 18-year-old (!) Imogen Wolff of Visma | Lease a Bike claimed her first professional victory in a sprint. "I am very happy with my first win. I didn’t expect it to come this soon. The team put their full trust in me to go for the stage win. When they ride so hard at the front for you, you want to finish it off. I'm glad I could deliver," Wolff said afterward.

"I won the intermediate sprint with ten kilometers to go and knew: if everything falls into place, I can win here. The finale was similar to yesterday, with a corner 100 meters from the finish. I knew I had to enter it first, and I did. After that, I managed to hold on to the line," said Wolff, who wasn't the only teenager from Visma | Lease a Bike to win on Saturday. The 19-year-old Matthew Brennan, who normally races for the pro team, dominated the Tour des 100 Communes while riding for the development squad. The British rider even had time to glance back mid-sprint.

Van Dijk wins overall classification in Spain

Sports director Jos van Emden was proud of Wolff. "Imogen is a killer. She always races for the win and has the right instinct. That makes our team stronger," he said. "Initially, it was disappointing that the stage was shortened because we had put everything on this final stage. So, to finish it off like this is fantastic," Van Emden added. Meanwhile, he also saw his fellow generation rider Ellen van Dijk win the overall classification in Spain.
"It wasn’t the easiest race to control because many riders could still win, and I didn’t have a big lead," Van Dijk explained. "So, we had to be super sharp. The team went full gas and was so impressive. We lost two seconds in the intermediate sprint, making it even more exciting. On the last climb, the team did a full lead-out for me, and I knew I had to finish it off."
"I’m super happy to win this overall classification and especially to reward the team for all their hard work," she added. "It was a fantastic week with a great atmosphere within the team. My focus was on winning the time trial in stage 1a, so taking the general classification is such a nice bonus. A great way to start the season, so I’m really happy!" Van Dijk concluded.
