The one-of-a-kind WorldTour turned endurance rider is set to leave EF Education-EasyPost after this endeavour, Cycling Weekly reported. He has been with the team for seven years, during which he has raced many gruelling endurance events, and broken records.

Another record on the horizon for Morton?

The Pony Express was a fast mail delivery service in the United States that used relays of horse-mounted riders to deliver post across the American Frontier between April 3, 1860 and October 1861. The route Morton will be taking is 1,966-miles (3,164km) long, and stretched from Missouri to Sacramento.
Morton's goal is to break a record that has stood since 1861, when the horsemen carrying Abraham Lincoln's inaugural address crossed the distance in seven days and 17 hours.

According to EF Education-Easy post, Morton finds the history of the route appealing. "There's this opportunity to ride a horse with a mochila full of mail through the night for 75 miles flat out, across remote, gnarly terrain that no one else has been crossing. It's quite a courageous thing."

The EFprocycling account has shared the proposed route

The seasoned endurance rider will be mimicking the way the mail riders used to switch horses, switching between a gravel, road and mountain bike depending on the terrain. This approach will allow him to use all of his disciplines in one endeavour.
Morton told his team that the conditions riders faced were 'hard to imagine'.
"That's why I want to go out there and try to get a better understanding of what that would have been like, and the difficulties they faced doing it over 150 years ago.”

Pony Express will be the final outing for Morton with his current team

Morton told Cycling Weekly that he will shortly be leaving EF Education-Easy Post. While the Australian did not offer further information on his future plans he said he would “still be riding, just not in the pink anymore.”
His last race for the team he has been a part of since 2019 was the 3-Peaks Cyclocross race in Yorkshire, which he won.
