Urska Zigart was on course for the first WorldTour victory of her career. The Slovenian rider from AG Insurance - Soudal went into the final day of the Tour de Romandie as the leader in the GC, but that's when things went wrong. She fell behind rival Elise Chabbey (FDJ-SUEZ) and ultimately finished just a few seconds short of overall victory in Switzerland. That hurt, but luckily, her fiancé, Tadej Pogacar, was there to comfort her.
Zigart had shown great form in the first two stages: she finished second in the prologue and repeated the feat in the queen stage. With two silver medals, she took the leader's jersey from Paula Blasi (UAE Team ADQ) and had one more day to survive to secure the overall victory. But the hilly stage around Aigle was very treacherous, so it was certainly not going to be easy.
Local rider Chabbey put her entire team to work and turned up the pressure. For a long time, the 28-year-old Slovenian seemed to be holding on, but on the final climb, things went wrong. Zigart struggled, and the experienced Swiss rider pushed on once she saw that the yellow jersey wearer was in trouble. The difference was not significant, but Zigart also made a mistake on the descent: she went straight on in a corner and had to make up even more ground.
It was exciting right up to the finish line, but in the end, the Slovenian champion fell seven seconds short of claiming the overall victory in Romandy. The disappointment was evident on Zigart's face, who skipped the interviews and press conference. She returned to the bus, where Pogacar met her. Her boyfriend immediately took her in his arms and comforted the unfortunate runner-up. On Saturday, he had also come to watch his fiancée.
