Marthe Truyen won the fifth and final stage of the Eneco Tour on Sunday. The Belgian rider from Fenix-Premier Tech was the strongest in a breakaway group that just managed to stay ahead of the peloton: her teammate Charlotte Kool finished third, behind Scarlett Souren (VolkerWessels). Lieke Nooijen of Visma | Lease a Bike easily secured the overall victory.

Nooijen started final stage of the Eneco Tour with a comfortable gap

Five days down, one to go! And on Dutch roads, Lieke Nooijen (Visma | Lease a Bike) has been dominant so far. The Dutch rider won both the prologue and the time trial, and held her own in the hilly stages.

But the final stage in Arnhem was definitely no walk in the park. The final battle took place around Burgers’ Zoo, the course for the 2024 Dutch National Championships.

SD Worx-Protime devastated by crash

And SD Worx-Protime was still hoping for success. Femke Markus was in second place in the general classification, but it was Julia Kopecky who went on the attack, along with Jeanne Korevaar (Liv AlUla Jayco).
They were reeled back in, however, but then it was Femke Gerritse who broke away. At that moment, a serious crash occurred.
Things went wrong at a narrow section of the road. And just about the entire SD Worx-Protime team ended up on the ground, including Nienke Vinke and Elena Cecchini.
The Italian was riding her final professional race but was unfortunately forced to withdraw. Most of the field seemed able to continue, but it did allow Gerritse to pull further ahead.

Attackers sense an opportunity around Arnhem

She held the lead for about 35 counts, but Liv AlUla Jayco and Visma | Lease a Bike gradually increased the pace. She was caught again, but then it was Nienke Vinke’s turn.
She couldn’t break away, and the subsequent breakaways—including one by Pfeiffer Georgi (Picnic PostNL)—were skillfully neutralized. It was Scarlett Souren (VolkerWessels), Marthe Truyen (Fenix-Premier Tech), and Talia Appleton (Liv AlUla Jayco) who managed to break away.

Visma controlled the final stages perfectly

SD Worx-Protime had to concede defeat in the face of the overwhelming strength of Visma | Lease a Bike and Nooijen. They were chasing the leaders, but would they be able to close the gap?
With five kilometers to go, the leaders still had a lead of about fifteen seconds. It was a nail-biter, but in the end, the peloton arrived just too late. Truuyen won by a narrow margin ahead of Souren, while Kool came in third from the pack. But Nooijen had the biggest reason to celebrate with the overall victory.
